Nestled within the serene landscapes of Sherwood Nature Reserve near Glenreagh, New South Wales, Scouts Falls offers adventurers a secluded retreat into nature’s tranquillity. This picturesque waterfall, cascading approximately 10 meters into a pristine swimming hole, provides an idyllic setting for those seeking a refreshing dip away from the crowds.
Reaching Scouts Falls is a rewarding adventure in itself. From Charlesworth Bay Beach Resort, embark on a 40-minute drive north along the Pacific Highway. Near Arrawarra, turn left onto Sherwood Creek Road and continue for about 30.5 kilometres; note that the last 14 kilometres are unsealed. Limited parking is available near the Sherwood Nature Reserve sign, just past the bridge over Middle Creek. Be prepared, as there are no facilities on-site, and the trail is not signposted.
The hike to Scouts Falls is relatively short, approximately 1.2 kilometres round trip, but it presents a moderate challenge due to the rugged and unmaintained nature of the trail. Hikers will navigate slippery rocks, multiple creek crossings, and occasional rock scrambles. The path can be overgrown in sections, adding to the sense of adventure. Despite these challenges, families with children have successfully completed the hike, making it accessible to those with a moderate fitness level.
Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the sight of Scouts Falls cascading into a deep, inviting pool. This natural waterhole is perfect for wild swimming, especially after rainfall when the waterfall is at its most impressive. However, caution is advised: the rocks can be slippery, and there are no lifeguards on duty. It’s recommended to avoid wearing sunscreen or insect repellent before swimming to preserve the creek’s delicate ecosystem. Always ensure you pack out all rubbish to maintain the area’s natural condition.
Footwear: Sturdy shoes with good grip are essential due to the slippery and uneven terrain.
Water Levels: The waterfall and swimming hole are most ideal after rainfall, but increased water flow can make the trail more challenging. Always assess conditions before proceeding.
Navigation: The trail lacks clear signage. Utilizing a GPS device or a detailed map can aid in navigation.
Facilities: There are no amenities on-site. Plan accordingly by bringing sufficient water, snacks, and other necessities.
